Relationship issues

For couples who want to get back on track, and individuals working through the relationships that shape them — communication, trust, conflict and connection.

02

Anxiety

Worry, fear and stress can take over. Together you’ll work toward the root cause and build coping skills that restore a sense of balance.

Treatment approach

What therapy
will be like.

I draw on several evidence-informed approaches and adapt them to you. Here’s what each one means in plain language, and you’re always welcome to ask.

Relational
Explores how your relationships — past and present — shape how you feel and act. The safe, accepting relationship in the room becomes part of the healing.
Emotionally Focused
Helps you understand and reshape the emotional patterns and bonds between people. Often used with couples to rebuild closeness and trust.
Family / Marital
Works with couples or families together to improve communication, resolve conflict and strengthen connection.
Family Systems
Looks at each person within the wider family, noticing the roles and patterns that repeat across relationships and generations.
Mindfulness-Based (MBCT)
Combines mindfulness practices with cognitive therapy to help you notice thoughts without being carried away by them — useful for anxiety and recurring low mood.
Narrative
Separates you from the problem and helps you re-author the story you tell about your life, drawing on strengths you may have overlooked.

Common questions

What is relational psychotherapy?

Relational psychotherapy looks at how your relationships, past and present, shape how you feel and act. The safe, accepting relationship between us becomes part of the work. It’s the main approach I use with individuals, couples and families.

What’s the difference between a psychotherapist, a psychologist and a counsellor in Ontario?

In Ontario, “Registered Psychotherapist” (RP) is a protected title: RPs are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and are trained to provide psychotherapy. Psychologists are regulated by their own college and can also diagnose mental health conditions. “Counsellor” on its own isn’t a protected title, so it’s worth asking any counsellor how they’re registered.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a psychotherapist?

No. You can contact me directly. Some insurance plans ask for a referral before they reimburse you, so check your plan if you’re claiming.

Do you see clients outside Cobourg?

Yes. Clients come from Cobourg, Port Hope, Trenton and beyond, and we can also meet online instead of at my office at 438 Division Street.
